Guidance on Continuous Professional Development for NVQ 3 & 4

We have produced this guidance to assist candidates on furthering their professional development and attaining membership of professional health and safety organisations eg IOSH and IIRM.

Level 3 NVQ Occupational Health and Safety

Candidates who achieve this qualification are entitled to apply for the following membership:

Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Technician Membership

You would be required to submit to IOSH a copy of your NVQ Level 3 Certificate and current CV, detailing your health and safety responsibilities. This is essential and should show your current role and responsibilities and indicate that your expertise represents two years full-time or five years part-time.

Should you hold a NEBOSH General Certificate then this also meets the certification requirement for this level.

NB If you have lost your NEBOSH Certificate then a letter indicating your ‘pass’ is acceptable.

Upon successful acceptance by IOSH you would then be able to use the letters Tech IOSH after your name.

Level 4 NVQ Occupational Health and Safety Practice

Candidates who achieve this qualification are entitled to apply for the following membership:

Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Graduate Membership

When you receive your NVQ Level 4 Certificate you should apply to IOSH sending a copy of your certificate with details of your qualification Provider, Assessor, Internal verifier and External Verifier. DTD Training will send this information to you with your certificate.

When you apply for the Graduate Membership you may be asked to complete an on line ‘Initial Professional Development’ (IPD). As a Technician Member you may be exempt from this.

Once you are confirmed as Graduate IOSH you will have to undertake a period of ‘Continual Professional Development’ (CPD). This can be a two year period and it is a mandatory element for those seeking to progress to Chartered status (CMIOSH), or to maintain the Graduate status level.

Your NVQ Level 4 Certificate will state that you now hold a Diploma of the Royal Society of Arts and you can use Dip RSA.

Applying for Chartered Membership

Two key features of this process are:

1                    A professional peer interview
2                    An Open Book Assessment

It is important to note that as the provider of the membership grade, IOSH will provide its members with all the necessary information and guidance relevant to the grade and specific route.

DTD Training will provide all their Health and Safety NVQ Candidates with the guidance appropriate to their qualification path.
